Features of SOFC and SOE

The solid oxide fuel cell is the only type of fuel cell, which can run directly in the reverse mode as electrolysis cell. That means they can act as a huge kind of battery, where

  • Electricity from fluctuating renewable sources is used for splitting water and produce hydrogen - which can be stored, transported or used for other purposes - with exceptionally high efficiencies (close to 100%) and
  • A fuel like hydrogen is used to produce electricity and heat with a combined efficiency over 90%, producing steam.
